A dump valve in a high-pressure gas separator is designed to maintain specific high and low liquid levels in the vessel. It can function in either on/off or continuous flow modes, and can be actuated electrically or pneumatically depending on system design.
Hydroplex dump valves, particularly the MiniMax model, can be configured with electric actuators and level control devices for enhanced performance.
How a Dump Valve Works
The dump valve operates with either an electric or pneumatic level controller that monitors the liquid level inside the separator. When liquid reaches a set threshold, the controller sends a signal to the valve actuator to open or close the valve in one of two modes:
- Snap Mode: The valve fully opens, quickly discharging liquid downstream.
- Modulating Mode: The valve partially opens to maintain a steady level inside the vessel, adjusting its position in real time based on liquid level changes.
Once the desired level is restored or liquid flow decreases, the controller signals the actuator to close the valve, ending the cycle.
Recommendations for Optimal Performance
To maximize efficiency and longevity of your dump valve system, Hydroplex recommends the following:
- Dump Cycle Span Control: With an electric actuator and level control device, you can program a delay between 3 and 30 seconds on both opening and closing actions. This allows for more liquid to be discharged per cycle, reducing dump frequency, improving measurement accuracy, and extending the lifespan of internal trim and seals.
- Install a Choke Nipple: Placing a fixed bean choke 12” to 18” downstream of the dump valve decreases fluid velocity, reducing trim wear, noise, and cavitation risk.
- Temperature Precaution: For fluid temperatures above 140°F, use a spacer bracket and adapter to prevent heat transfer to the actuator.
Benefits of Installing a Hydroplex Valve
Choosing a Hydroplex dump valve system delivers several performance and maintenance advantages:
- Direct Mount Actuation: No need for brackets, linkage, or adapters—improves control precision.
- Twin Disc Trim: Provides accurate control with a 90° rotary motion, separating control and sealing surfaces for longer life.
- High Repeatability: Consistent, reliable performance even in demanding applications.
- Durable Design: Features a robust stem, strong seals, and solid tungsten carbide trim to handle hundreds of thousands of cycles.
- Service Longevity: Stainless steel internals increase the time between service intervals.
- Flexible Installation: Easily convert between inline or angle body configuration by repositioning the 2” NPT plug.
- Simple Maintenance: An internal cartridge assembly allows for quick and straightforward servicing.
