Custom Valve Solution for Pipeline System in Louisiana
Our client, a prominent pipeline company in Louisiana, specializes in transporting liquid ethane and ethylene from a processing facility to salt dome storage via pipelines. The pipeline company approached Hydroplex with a challenging fluid control problem, seeking an evaluation and a tailored solution.
The task was to design a custom throttling valve for a pipeline system that could be installed at the discharge point of a multi-stage horizontal centrifugal (“H”) pump, a type of pump frequently used in high-volume Saltwater Disposal service. The control valve’s role was to regulate the pressure generated by the pump (ranging from a minimum of 1800 psi to a maximum of 2400 psi) to ensure optimal performance. Moreover, in case of accidental closure, a flow path through the valve was necessary to prevent pump damage due to overpressure.
The engineering team at Hydroplex, in direct collaboration with the end user, assessed the operating environment, control method, and the client’s desired outcome, leading to a highly successful solution. A modified version of the Hydra Series Model HCY valve was chosen for this purpose.
(The images depict a Hydra Series Model HCY valve with 2″ ANSI Class 1500 RTJ Flanges and an electric actuator mounted on the pump.)
The custom engineered HCY valve maintains the H pump at or near its most efficient point on its curve, preventing pump damage due to low pipeline injection pressure. Additionally, Hydroplex designed a .050″ hole in the center of the tungsten trim to ensure that even if the actuator accidentally closed, the valve would still allow flow, thereby protecting the pump from damage.
This valve has been in operation for five years without requiring maintenance or causing downtime. The client, satisfied with the solution, purchased additional valves for installation in their pipeline distribution system.
