Tourmaline will be incorporating the new valve in new well construction in the Edson area going forward
Abrasion Resistant Tungsten Trim rotates to throttle flow without exposing sealing surface to sand
The Problem: Every separator in oil and gas service has a level control dump valve. A typical installation uses a globe valve with a linear actuator, either pneumatic or electric. However, the valve and actuator are prone to wear, particularly in high duty cycles (open/close). Sand entrained in the oil and water will erode the valve trim. The valve stem packing will also wear and leak. Motors, Gears, and Belleville/Spring Washers in the linear actuator will wear and breakdown. High maintenance requirements can lead to high costs, lost production, and methane emissions if the separator is de-pressured to repair or replace the valve.
The Results: The Bear Dump Valve has operated for 5+ months without any operating issues and with no outage for cleaning, repairs, or maintenance. Tourmaline is pleased with the performance of Calscan’s Bear Dump Valve and will be incorporating the new valve in new well construction in the Edson area going forward.
Deployment Information
Testing Period: July to December 2023
Tourmaline Wellsite: 03-31-050-21 W5
The testing was conducted under the NGIF Accelerator’s Emissions Testing Centre Program, funded in part by Prairies Economic Development Canada.
Technology Description: Calscan Solution has introduced the revolutionary Bear Dump Valve. The Bear Dump Valve integrates a low-power electric quarter-turn actuator with a twin-disc tungsten trim valve, which provides performance benefits over the traditional linear actuators and valves.
Safety First: The Bear electric actuator is explosion-proof, low power, with rapid cycle times, with no performance issues over 750,000 cycles.
Reliable Operations: The Bear Dump Valve is ideal for solar power systems with battery backup as the rotary actuator only draws power when operating (either opening or closing the valve). In contrast most electric actuators continuously draw electricity even in standby mode. This helps ensure reliable service even on low light days in winter.
Innovative Design: The Bear twin-disk valve is available in 1” or 2” NPT connections. The twin disks separate the sealing surface from exposure to the fluid media including entrained sand. This ensures a dependable and long-lasting shut-off seal.
Deployment Details: Calscan’s Bear Dump Valve was deployed at a new Tourmaline gas well in Edson Alberta in July 2023. The gas well has high liquids and solids loading, with the separator level control dump valve cycling (ie opening and closing) at a high frequency. Previously, the linear actuator/globe valve was taken off-line for maintenance and repairs every 3 months since the well came on-line in September 2022.
